I need to know what cars meet this criteria: I will put a start next to the most important things.
1. Manuel trans *
2. 2+2 Seating *
3. Coupe or Cabrio *
4. Two doors *
5. Power(more than 150hp)
6. Torque
7. Handles well *
8. Some practicality(capable of 2-person roadtrip)
9. Easy to work on *
10. $2000, no more than that. *
11. Not Japanese or Korean(Because WW2 and Korean/Vietnam War) It's not me, it's my dad. *
Please provide a picture of said car(s) with comment.

I dislike when people ask for a perfect car for two thousand dollars.

E30, the answer when Miata isn't the answer.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:20 |

GM F-bodies, to start with. Probably 3rd gen or early 4th.
Like this one:

I believe this checks off every line item.

Didn't see #11 coming
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:22 |
|
Literally meets all your requirements. Also, unless you lost a leg at Pearl Harbor #11 is baffling to me.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:23 |
|
11. Not Japanese or Korean(Because WW2 and Korean/Vietnam War)
Shouldn't that rule out Germany because you know, WWI, WWII......
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:23 |
|
It doesn't have to meet all of the criteria, I will specify which ones are most important.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:23 |
|
Are we assuming "running & driveable" is a requirement? Because I can't see an E30 for under $2,000 is going to be in any decent shape.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:23 |
|
Not my fault. Blame my dad.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:24 |

Does #11 not also rule out German and Italian?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:24 |

Corvair turbo

11. Not Japanese or Korean(Because WW2 and Korean/Vietnam War)
FATHER??? IS THAT YOU??
/s
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:24 |

If I can ignore number ten then I can get you a bunch of great cars!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:24 |
|
Fox body Mustang, - You can make them handle well, for 2K you should be willing to compromise a little
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:25 |
|
Can be had for no more than 500 bucks. MAX
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:25 |
|
Because of the Korean war? What?
You do realize that Hyundai and Kia are not North Korean companies, right? We fought with the South Koreans, not against them.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:25 |
|
Ehhhh, not so much #7. Mine has rather loose steering and drifts all over the road in the slightest breeze.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:25 |
|
This is my dad who will say "your grandfather fought in WW2 and blah blah blah". He won't move on.

![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:27 |

Is he alright with German cars?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:27 |
|
The XJ handles great - especially after you put HD springs and sway bars on it.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:28 |
|
Fix yo' shit! Granted I rebuilt the steering box in mine.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:28 |
|
Are e30 2+2?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:29 |
|
Nope! Don't ask me why.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:29 |
|
Nope, German or Italian is fine.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:29 |
|
It is...Unfortunately... -_-
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:29 |
|
Under $2000 and excluding Asian cars does not mix.
And did you forget we fought the Germans as well in WW2?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:30 |
|
If only I could.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:30 |
|
I'd start arguing with dad but I know what lies down that road.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:30 |
|
Holy shit, that is awesome!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:30 |
|
Tell that to my dad, it simply cannot be an Asian make or model. -_-
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:30 |
|
Lol, on the priority list of things to be fixed on that Jeep, the steering is kinda far down. It's also got a 3" lift kit, I disconnected the sway bar links for summer, and it's leaking power steering fluid, so there's that.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:30 |
|
By that criteria, no German or Italian either.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:31 |
|
Yep. He's got a 911.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:31 |
|
Sorry 'bout that. You're going to miss out on a lot of good cars. I'm guessing he's buying?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:31 |
|
Read 11 again. It's not my criteria by choice. It's my dad's ignorance.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:32 |
|
No car lies down the road if I even go off about it.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:33 |

That reminds me of the time my father first met my college boyfriend, who happened to be Jewish:
Dad, waiting out on the front lawn: So, what's he driving?
Me: A 3series...
Dad: German car, eh?? Those Jews sure are forgiving!
Me: ........
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:33 |

For $2,000, you say?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:34 |

Escort ZX2 S/R is close if you can find one. Manual first gen Neons? LOL.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:34 |

Nope, German or Italian is fine, the old man has a freaking 911.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:35 |

Well, for $200, this one was kind of running:

![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:35 |
|
That is flat out one of the stupidest things I've ever read, since we were and still are allies with South Korea. Can you not get that through to your Dad?
We've been to war with basically every country with a reputable and large automotive industry EXCEPT for South Korea. Your father shouldn't buy any British, Italian, German, Japanese, or hell, even any cars that have been made in Mexico should be right out.
Maybe include Canada in that list.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:35 |
|
Then E30 is best bro
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:35 |
|
Only if there are two seatbelts instead of three.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:35 |
|
I am, but that doesn't change the "Asian car" dispute at all.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:36 |
|
Well, that's... Uh... Odd. Then again, it's not like prejudice has to make logical sense.
Anyway, have you considered an old MG of some sort? They're not what you'd call reliable, but reasonably easy to work on from what I understand.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:36 |
|
I can't see the pic. What is it?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:36 |
|
Damn skippy. #43 is a LeMons racer and #33 is a turbo auto-x car.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:36 |
|
Aha! It was a ringer for poor handling!
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:36 |

IROC-Z
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:37 |
|
Well shit. Did you explain that American cars under $2,000 are fucking terrible?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:37 |
|
Triumph GT6. No Axis powers required.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:38 |
|
(hint hint: racism)
My dad's guilty of the same, but strangely OK with Japanese sportbikes.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:38 |
|
Why can't I ask why?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:38 |
|
You're telling me. Ask me how I know?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:39 |
|
And it can be had for $2k?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:39 |
|
OK. I'm not going to try to figure that logic out. Probably has to do with the WASP profile?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:39 |
|
If you are patient and know what to look for.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:39 |
|
I feel so bad for you, for such utterly pointless restrictions.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:39 |
|
I'd like it to be somewhat reliable, as in, not gonna leave me on the side of the road every time I drive it.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:39 |
|
NOT ENOUGH STARS ********
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:40 |

That is filthy, you should feel bad about the boner you have given many people. (Pink-ons too)
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:40 |
|
Are they? I don't know?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:40 |
|
How did I forget this one? It's one of my go to affordable classics. It's the American 911 for the man who doesn't want to spend more than $2,000.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:41 |
|
Agreed, but good luck finding one on the cheap from an enthusiast. For some reason every current E30 owner thinks their rusting 318i is worth it's weight in gold.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:41 |
|
Do we have the same dad? He's ok with Japanese bikes as well...
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:41 |
|
Get yourself a cheap reliable motorcycle. Oh wait...
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:42 |
|
Well I've already answered that question about 5 times in this thread alone and it's apart of #11.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:42 |
|
WASP profile? And there is no logic here.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:43 |
|
I hate my restrictions. I'd maybe even consider a Z car(240) if I could.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:43 |
|
Probably not, and I forgot the 2002 exists and that's one of my favorite cars. Try to find one of those! Like an E30 but much cooler and older!
...wait...didn't we just have this conversation
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:44 |
|
VW Rabbit/golf/Cabrio (doesn't meet 5, but the rest match).
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:44 |

My dad has a Harley Wide Glide.... Shit. -_-
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:45 |

Volvo P1800

How does he feel about DSMs? They were built in Illinois.
side note: How old are you?
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:46 |
|
I know. Any argument with my dad even if I prove to be right he just pretends I was confused and he was arguing in favor of the right side all along. It's just not worth it.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:49 |
|
Well, mine's living in New York and most certainly does not own a 911, so I think we're in the clear.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:50 |
|
We did..... :P
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:50 |
|
I like that. or a Scirocco
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:51 |
|
What are DSMs?
And I'm 18.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:51 |
|
WASP. White Anglo Saxon Protestant. Because the Germans and Italians look like us, they are better than an Asian. It was a common thought in the back of the minds in that era. That was one of the reasons American troops were much harsher on Asian prisoners than on European.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:52 |
|
Thank you for understanding.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:52 |
|
If your dad was more accepting towards the Japanese, he could have a TON of cheap, fun cars. . .
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:52 |
|
In case you missed the guy who suggested the corvair with no picture.
The Corvair and P1800 are the best affordable classic sports cars in my opinion.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:53 |
|
Then WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU WAITING FOR
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:56 |
|
You just need to find the old couple that owned one. There's a navy 4spd 4 door E30 in my grandmothers 55 community. I hope to run into the owner one day. There are no badges on the car so I don't know what model.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:56 |
|
Fascinating. I don't think he's ever even heard of this before.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:56 |
|
So much cheap fun I could be having..
![]() 06/18/2014 at 14:57 |
|
I just wanna get all the options out there.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:00 |

Assume 325e. Always assume 325e. That way you can't be disappointed.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:00 |

Yeah like a lot of guys I thought it was just a "my dad" problem but I watched my buddy go through it with his dad over his last car purchase.
Buddy: I need to buy a car
Buddy's dad: You should buy your Grandpa's minivan for 4k. It's only got 50k miles
B: I don't want a minivan.
BD: It will be reliable
Buddy ended up buying the van, ended up being a bit of a lemon because it was barely driven and he has been sorting out engine and fuel problems for a while. His dad still acts like it was good advice. Aint no real point in arguing with dad.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:00 |
|
So it can't be Japanese, it has to handle well, can't be above $2,000, and it has to be reliable? 2+2 seats?
Usually cars known for reliability have a hard time staying below $5,000 where I am so...
Ford Focus Zx3. Because it was peppy. It came with a 5-speed. But mainly because fuck it; that's close enough. That's as good as it gets.
*Driver must Hail Mary before switching on the ignition in hopes that the O2 sensor holds true for another day, because replacing that on top of regular maintenance would basically end up costing more than the worth of the car at this point.
Buy Japanese. It's important to remember that while someone might be a bit bigoted, you're not stupid.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:01 |

He has a Porsche! Does he know anything of WW2?

I, being a history buff, love(d) to talk to old timers about the wars. There were a lot of conceptions of the enemies. Much based on looks. Viet Nam is a good example. A lot of soldiers would cut off an ear of a dead enemy and wear them like trophies on a string.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:07 |

The Chrysler and Mitsubishi alliance that gave birth to the Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser, Mitsu Eclipse, 3000 GT/Stealth R/T, and the Gallant VR-4 gets lumped in there for some reason but it was a homologation car for the WRC. Go find a Plymouth Laser R/T AWD and have fun with it. That would fit your criteria, well aside from it being dead reliable, you will have to work on it. Also you will probably end up having a better chance finding a stock Laser than you would a stock Eclipse GSX. You can think of the Eclipse based cars as slightly neutered Evo's without all the electronic wizzardry that made the JDM Evos so bad ass that we didn't get the features on the USDM cars until the Evo became a bloated pig.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:07 |

DSMs or Diamond Star Motors was a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler that built cars in Normal Illinois. They made the Dodge Stealth/ Mitsubishi 3000GT, Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon/Plymouth Laser/Chrysler Sebring Coupe/Dodge Avenger, and I think the Galant. All American. Just wondering if it's the country of origin or where it's built.
At your age I can see why your dad's opinion is a big decision, but when you get older you'll see it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, it's what you want.
![]() 06/18/2014 at 15:11 |

I've already got a Focus.

It was more than reciprocated by the Japanese. Bataan, and many other atrocities, including incidences of cannibalism reported more than one place.
Still doesn't make the "No Koreans" make even the tiniest bit of sense, since, you know, we fought on behalf of SK, the makers of all those cars...
